I am happy to say that I finished my list of housecleaning things to do yesterday and more!! I finished all the dishes, plus (not on the list) I scrubbed out the kitchen sink. I picked up the clothes off the floor of the bathroom, and (also not on the list) I did a couple loads of laundry. I wiped off the counter in the bathroom and took out the garbage in that room. And I cleaned the litter box (emptied out the old litter and put fresh litter in). Woohoo!!

It really helped to have a goal to think about, so I’m going to write out a list for today, too. Here’s my list for today:

* Clean the other cat litter box (we have two)
* Sweep and mop the bathroom floor
* Pick up the upstairs hallway and vacuum it
* Vacuum the stairway
* Clean up the front entry
* Do a load of laundry
* Keep up on the dishes and go to bed with a clean sink

My 7 year old and my 9 year old like to help take out the recycling to the recycling bin, so we’ll probably do that together today while I take out the kitchen trash. We have a long, bumpy, dirt driveway on a steep hill and the garbage and recycling containers are down toward the bottom of the hill, so it’s quite a trek to get there and back, especially when carrying a heavy garbage sack (like yesterday when I took the contents of the cleaned litter box out …. thank goodness my husband saw and offered to carry one of the sacks!). Sometimes it would be nice to have them closer to the house, but it’s good to get outside and the exercise is good, right? ;)

I mentioned up in the first paragraph that I scrubbed out the kitchen sink, and I wanted to share about that. We have a sink that shows marks easily, and I don’t like to use bleach, so sometimes it gets more dirty-looking than I’d like. I decided last night to try a natural approach to cleaning it. Well, I’ve done that before, of course, but last night I really gave it my all! Here’s what I did…

I sprinkled baking soda in the sink and scrubbed. I rinsed, and it wasn’t all that great looking, but I came back to it later. I finally decided to put both baking soda and salt in the sink, plus a drop of peppermint essential oil to make the experience more fun (if something smells good, it makes it more fun for me to do. . . I love essential oils!). And I scrubbed and scrubbed. . . rinsed and sprinkled some more and scrubbed and scrubbed again. I’m not sure how many times I rinsed and added more, but finally it looked free from stains! I am so pleased. :D

Years ago a friend shared a recipe for a natural cleaner, and it included baking soda, salt, and peppermint oil, the ingredients I used last night, but I’m afraid I don’t have the recipe anymore and can’t remember exactly how she made hers. On the GCM message board, though, there is a thread which contains lots of recipes for natural cleaners.  I’m going to link to it here in case you’d like to take a look: Natural Cleaning Recipes.

Today I’m hoping we will go for a nature walk. It’s actually sunny outside! I hope it stays that way today. And tonight is family movie night. We have that every Friday. We watch a movie (you probably guessed that) and eat homemade pizza! I make pizza dough and form them into little personal pizzas and then my kids fix their pizzas up the way they like! :)

Oh, it’s so wonderful — I hear a bird singing outside! The golden light of morning is shining and the combination makes me really excited about the coming of spring. I wonder if the Indian plum bushes are blooming yet?! I definitely want to go on a nature walk today!

I pray that you have a beautiful day full of His grace and peace!

Boring Housework

I’m not very good at housework. I’m pretty good at thinking about what I’d like to get done, but then I get bogged down in details and distracted and become overwhelmed and don’t actually end up getting much done.

I’m going to write out a list of what I’d like to get down today and then come back and check them off. Sometimes being accountable really helps and lists help keep me more focused. Seeing a list of what I’ve accomplished is encouraging, too. So, here goes!

Finish the dishes
Clean the cat litter box
Clean the counters in the bathroom
Take out the garbage in the bathroom
Pick up the dirty clothes on the bathroom floor
Clear off the dining room table

Okay, I’ll start with that. See you later. :)

Welcome ♥

[a recent picture of me taking a picture / taken by my daughter]Hi!  My name is Jeri, and I’m a vegan, sahm, unschooling, attachment parenting, crunchy, rather conservative, Christian mama with four children ages 7 – 16. My gentle, aspie husband and I have been married for 20 years. I love taking pictures (and my children do, too — my older daughter took the picture in the header) and hiking and baking vegan goodies.

I’ve been online since 1996 (before blogging was popular!). I originally bought this domain name so I could have a personal website here, but then instead I ended up using it for Gentle Christian Mothers (GCM). GCM moved to the domain name “” several years ago, and the “” domain hasn’t really been used since then (except for my email!). Today, though, I decided, well, why not start a blog here! I’m going to be sharing about our life, about parenting and cooking and housecleaning and nature and our cats. . . all sorts of things.  It should be fun. ;)
